Around this time of year pet owners often tell us their older pets are slowing down. Snoozing more, hesitant to jump up, walk or exercise as usual, trouble sitting or standing and general stiffness are just some of the things they mention. So is this common in older dogs and cats and is there something you can do to help? The answer to both questions is yes, the most common reason for stiffness and soreness is arthritis which is more prevalent in older pets, those with previous injury or cartilage damage and those who have a genetic disposition.
The good news is, there are various options to help your pet enjoy a pain free winter. Once your veterinarian has confirmed a diagnosis of arthritis they can recommend a treatment plan and home care for your pet.
Treatment may include:
- Weight and exercise management
- Changes to your pet's home environment
- Medications to improve the joints and for pain relief.
